Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering, a long-standing client of JMJ, recently underwent the second phase of its DS-CARE safety culture innovation approach. After all supervisors, managers, leaders, and frontline workers submitted surveys, attended coaching sessions, and raised their attention to safety, they volunteered to share how their perceptions of safety have shifted. The following video consists of members of the DSME workforce describing their experiences, challenges, and the impact of DS-CARE’s safety culture.
The DS-CARE safety culture innovation approach, in partnership with JMJ, began in 2021. The approach is owned and led by DSME’s production department, with support from HSE during phase one. The first phase consisted of a safety culture survey and leadership and coaching program across all levels, from management to frontline supervisors. To accelerate, 66 Incident and Injury-Free™ (IIF™) safety leaders (production managers and supervisors) were appointed.
In phase two, DSME will continue its organizational safety culture transformation journey by extending Incident and Injury-Free workplace practices to every production division as well as subcontractors and quality.
DSME yard General Manager, Park Doo-Sun, said, “The results of last year’s safety culture survey showed that there’s a big knowledge gap in our safety awareness. We are striving to reduce that gap and continue our efforts towards an IIF workplace with proactive safety leadership and a strong safety culture.”
In recognition of DSME’s extraordinary commitment to a safety culture, JMJ presented the project with a ‘Making the Impossible Possible Award.’ Addressing the launch event via video, JMJ’s Managing Director – Major Capital Projects, Mike Goddu said, “With DS-CARE, you’ve not only made the impossible possible, but you’ve also sustained it and are making history… I applaud your results. The thousands of workers who come to a workplace have managers who actively care, they have colleagues who look out for each other and they all go home safely day after day … I applaud you for extending the DS-CARE program and look forward to continuing to work with you.”
Headquartered in Geoje, Gyeongsang, DSME is one of the ‘big three’ shipbuilders in South Korea. The company has developed into the world’s premium specialized shipbuilding and offshore contractor that builds various vessels, offshore platforms, drilling rigs, floating oil production units, submarines, and destroyers.
