One of our clients, a leader in the Mining and Metals industry, is exploring the following question: what qualities will our project managers need to possess to be successful in the future? JMJ was asked to contribute to this conversation.

What follows are 6 areas of expertise that must be present:

  1. Managing (and balancing) the 3 energies
  • Task completion
  • Relationship – the foundation for trust and for high performance team work
  • Context – keeping the “why” (the purpose/the meaning) present
  1. An attention to development – personal and organizational – to breakthrough to the next level – must pay attention to the “identify that is driving the train” – involves ‘shadow’ work’
  1. Ability to inspire—comes from deep humility and a mastery of the “3 energies”
  1. Ability to successfully address with Complex Adaptive Challenges (cause and effect, linear thinking will not carry the day)
  1. Taking an Integral Perspective - paying attention to the invisible (interior) as well as the visible (exterior) – an ability impact intentions and culture as well as behaviors and systems)
  1. Being a safety leader – you cannot be a great manager (or a great company) and hurt, kill or maim people
